Now, let’s get to the main event—John Egan. Rumor has it, we’re looking at bringing in a center-back on a free transfer, and John Egan’s name has been tossed around quite a bit. We’re on the hunt for someone to fill that fourth-choice center-back role, a position that’s been a bit of a scramble since we lost a couple of key players at the end of the window. It’s all a bit last-minute, honestly, but here we are.
Some of you might be thinking, “Egan? Really?” But hang on—remember when we signed Craig Dawson? Not exactly the most glamorous of signings, and look how that turned out. Sometimes these under-the-radar moves turn into absolute gems. Egan’s got experience—70-odd Premier League games, over 30 international caps. You can’t argue with that kind of pedigree, especially when you’re looking for a reliable backup who can step in if needed.
Word on the street (thanks to ExWHUemployee and others) is that Egan could be involved in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Dagenham & Redbridge this week. In fact, it might even be happening today! We’ll have to wait and see how that plays out, but it’s definitely one to keep an eye on.
So, what’s Egan all about? He’s a solid defender, great in the air, and has even captained his national team. Sure, he’s not played as many Premier League games as some of the big names, but don’t sleep on this one. He’s a free transfer, so we’re not breaking the bank here, and he’s not going to be on massive wages either. If we’re looking to save some cash while bolstering the squad, this could be a clever move.
He’s got the experience we need, and let’s not forget, we were linked with him last year too, so this isn’t a completely new idea. With a few other players still off on international duty, it sounds like we’ll know by the end of this break if Egan’s the man we’re bringing in. If all goes well, he’ll be registered before the deadline for squad submissions to the Premier League.
